17-09-2015, GCE-Int | The Global Campaign for Education is delighted to announce that our President, Camilla Croso, will be speaking on behalf of GCE, its members and education rights campaigners worldwide at the forthcoming UN Sustainable Development Summit. It is the forum during which world leaders will discuss and agree the 17 Sustainable Development Goals; it will be held 24-27 September at UN Headquarters in New York, and several GCE members will be in attendance.
GCE and its members have worked alongside partners and supporting organisations to campaign for an holistic, rights-based approach to education beyond 2015, and broadly we have had some real successes. Goal 4 calls for ‘inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all’ – making it a much more ambitious goal than achieved in 2000, with the Millennium Development Goals.
However, there remains all to play for, with the process of setting the ‘indicators’ for the targets – the measures by which countries will assess their progress towards achieving the targets – under way, with a likely conclusion date of March 2016.
Camilla Croso has served as the president of GCE since 2011, having been re-elected earlier this year during GCE’s World Assembly. As President of GCE, Camilla represents civil society as a member of the UN Global Education First Initiative Steering Committee, UNESCO’s Collective Consultation of NGOs on Education For All (CCNGO) Coordination Group and as the Co-Chair of the Education For All Steering Committee.
Camilla is also the coordinator of the Latin American Campaign for the Right to Education (CLADE), a network that represents 15 national education forums, 8 regional networks from Latin America and 5 international NGOs with solid presence in the region.
