20 jaar GCE: wat is er bereikt in het onderwijs en wat staat ons nog te doen?

Op 12 december vieren we 20 jaar GCE! Corien Sips van het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken, Penina Olum van FAWE (lid van GCE-Kenia) en Emmanuel Manyasa van Twaweza (ook lid van GCE-Kenia), kijken ieder vanuit hun eigen perspectief terug. Welke vooruitgang hebben zij gezien, waar zijn ze tevreden over? Maar ook: waar gaat het nog steeds niet goed genoeg? Wat staat ons nog te doen?

Eén ding is duidelijk: we zijn er nog lang niet. Het zal nog veel inspanning kosten om Duurzaam Ontwikkelingsdoel 4 te bereiken. In het internationale onderwijsbeleid lijkt de focus vooral te liggen op vaardigheden die helpen bij het ‘klaarstomen’ voor de arbeidsmarkt. Echter, past dat wel helemaal in de Duurzame Ontwikkelingsdoelen? Die focussen namelijk samen op een samenleving die voor iedereen leefbaar, inclusief, vreedzaam en democratisch is. En daar is méér voor nodig dan het aanleren van technische vaardigheden op school. Daarom staat deze middag in het teken van één van de dingen die meer aandacht zouden moeten krijgen in het onderwijs: Life Skills. We zullen inhoudelijk op Life Skills ingaan: wat zijn Life Skills, waar dienen ze voor en waarom zijn ze belangrijk? Daarnaast zullen we aan de slag gaan met verschillende aspecten van Life Skills en de vraag hoe we Life Skills in onze eigen organisaties kunnen betrekken. Tot slot koppelen we dit terug naar de GCE en de Ontwikkelingsdoelen: hoe passen Life Skills in het internationale onderwijsbeleid?

20 years of GCE: what has been achieved in education and what do we still need to do?

On December 12, we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the 20 Global Campaign for Education (GCE). Corien Sips from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Penina Olum from FAWE and Emmanuel Manyasa from Twaweza (both member of GCE-Kenya) and other guests, look back from their own perspective. What progress did they see, what have we achieved? But also: what is not going well yet and what do we still need to do?

One thing is clear: we are not there yet. A lot of effort still needs to be made to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 4. There is a growing trend to view education as a series of measurable skills that primarily serve the job market. How does this trend relate to the Sustainable Development Goals? They focus on a society that is livable, inclusive, peaceful and democratic for everyone. But much more is needed to achieve that. Therefore, this meeting will focus on one aspect in education that we believe needs more attention: Life Skills. What are they, what are they for and why are they important? We will also discuss several aspects of Life Skills and how we can include them in our own policies. Finally, we will reflect on the role Life Skills play on the international education agenda.
