Digital, Education and Development. How to be smart about it?

Digital technology has enormous potential to improve the quality and reach of education. However, inappropriate mainstreaming of digital technology could be counter-productive when aiming to achieve SDG4 – to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

How can we ensure that digital technology reaches all learners? How can ICT be used to improve the quality of education practices? How can ICT help and support teachers and school leaders to become even more effective educators? How can the education system ensure that young people are taught the necessary skills to function in an increasingly digitalised world? How do we combine investments in “digital technology for education” (D4E) and in “education for a digital world” (E4D)?

These and other questions will be addressed at the 2017 conference, which will take place on 18 May 2017 in Brussels.

The conference will be opened by Alexander De Croo, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Development Cooperation, Digital Agenda, Telecom and Postal services, followed by a keynote address by Mark West, ICT in Education Specialist at UNESCO. Subsequently, a panel of international experts will address – from different angles – the central question: how to be smart about digitalisation for it to effectively further SDG4?

In the afternoon, three parallel break-out sessions will respectively focus on (a) the use of ICT in pedagogy, (b) ICT and quality education for all (inclusivity), and (c) transferable skills and lifelong learning. Each topic will be introduced by a guest speaker, but we also invite participants to share their experiences (15 minutes per presentation, max. three presentations per session). Presentations will be followed by a discussion with all participants of the session.

If you have a good practice to share, linked to one of the three focus areas as outlined, please send us your proposal using this format by Wednesday 19 April 2017 (COB). If selected, we will contact you with more details on the practical organisation of each session.’s annual conference aims to enrich discussion on education and development issues by giving the floor to academics and researchers, policy makers and practitioners from all over the world.
