The Global Education Monitoring Report 2016 shows the potential for education to propel progress towards all global goals outlined in the new 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (SDGs). It also shows that education needs a major transformation to fulfill that potential and meet the current challenges facing humanity and the planet. There is an urgent need for greater headway in education. On current trends, the world will achieve universal primary education in 2042, universal lower secondary education in 2059 and universal upper secondary education in 2084. This means the world would be half a century late for the 2030 SDG deadline.

GEMR 2016 Gender Review
The Gender Review of the 2016 GEM Report recognizes and largely focuses on the challenges facing girls and women because of the disproportionate overall disadvantage they continue to experience in and beyond education. But it also understands that gender disadvantage can be experienced by boys and men, and that gender equality involves males, relationships and power. The Gender Review discusses global and regional trends in achieving parity in education access, participation and completion and in selected learning outcomes. It then shifts to an evidence-based discussion of relationships between education, gender and sustainable development. It concludes with ways forward.
